EFL CEFA CUP FINALS FOR C6 GIRLS AND BOYS

Wednesday 23rd September saw our C6 Boys and Girls teams heading to the FA’s National Football Centre, St. George’s Park, for their respective finals in the EFL CEFA CUP.

The players travelled up the night before and were provided accommodation in the nearby Holiday Inn, supported by our Social Inclusion and Disability Main Sponsors — Holiday Inn Express City Swindon City Centre.

It was the girls game first, and they braved the elements on the David Beckham pitch, taking on Sheffield United.

A superb headed goal from Sophie Mitchell put the girls ahead early on, but Holly Jenkins equalised for Sheffield United after only ten minutes. Louisa Barraclough put United ahead just before half-time, but just minutes after the whistle to start the second half, Imogen Wilkins put the two sides level again.

After a tense second half, it was looking certain that the game would be decided from the penalty spot when Swindon team Captain, Hannah Peachey, took a first-touch shot from well outside the area which sailed clear over the head of the United keeper, before finding the back of the net.

Ten excruciating minutes of stoppage time followed, before the final whistle blew and our girls were crowned champions.

After some all-too-brief celebrations, the girls were back in the mini-bus and on their way back to Swindon, as the Boys arrived for their afternoon match.

They took to the pitch to take on Macclesfield in their Final, and seemed to have their game plan sussed out from the off, with Dylan Boulton scoring an early goal to give Swindon the lead. The tide of the game turned however, and an equaliser from Macclesfield’s Luke Draysey was followed by another from Cole Ojungu, leaving Swindon 2 – 1 down at half-time.

The second half started with Swindon coming out of the gate strong, but they failed to actualise any of their chances, though the game seemed an even contest. An aggravation of a pre-existing injury to Ben Paul forced an early substitution, and a formation change, which left Swindon on the backfoot, and open to a further goal for Macclesfield, from Joao Soares.

The Swindon Boys didn’t back down though, and kept the pressure on, and the last ten minutes saw a number of Swindon chances, but it wasn’t mean to be, and the referee blew the final whistle with the score at 3 – 1 to Macclesfield.

It was an amazing day of extreme highs and lows, but all of our players showed incredible spirit, great attitudes, and exemplary behaviour, so we would like to commend every single one of the C6ers who came up with us.
