Zambian High Commissioner Visiting Swindon

News

Posted Apr 21, 2014

zambia-flagEaster Monday sees a very welcome visitor to Swindon in the form of the High Commissioner for Zambia, His Excellency Mr Paul W. Lumbi. The High Commissioner will be here at the invitation of the Football in the Community Trust at Swindon Town FC, who are currently hosting five visitors from Livingstone, Zambia, the latest development of the developing partnership between Swindon and the beautiful city of Livingstone, the main point of tourist access to the Victoria Falls. The link has developed over the past six years, and has included four visits by FITC staff to Livingstone to deliver a wide range of football-based programmes for young people across the city, and has also widened out to include a number of local schools, including Crowdys Hill, who have built up a close relationship with David Livingstone High School, and four primary schools. The link has also been advanced by the wonderful work of Lights for Learning’, a Cricklade-based charity offering custom-built, portable solar lighting systems which are especially effective in rural areas of Africa, where mains power is often still rare to find. Another valued partner, recently joined us, is Green Machine, based in Membury, which reconditions computers for re-use, and generously donates a number of those computers to good causes. We fully expect the Zambian visitors to return home with one or two for Livingstone schools. The High Commissioner, accompanied by Mrs IkayiMushinge, Economic Counsellor, will meet the Zambian visitors, who have been fulfilling a packed itinerary over the past two weeks, together with members of the Zambian community, staff of the FITC Trust and others involved in the project, on Monday 21 April at 11am, in Christchurch Community Hall, Cricklade Street. He will then meet members of the Swindon Rockets Powerchair Football Club at the County Ground, before attending the Swindon Town versus Bradford City match.
