On Saturday 11th January, the Swindon Town Football in the Community Twilight programme, which now falls under the Street IMG_0040Games Swindon umbrella, was in full swing with the participants involved within the programme offered the chance to display their talents and positive attitudes in a STFiTC & Street Games Football Festival. From start to finish, the day and it’s events proved a hit with the 35 youths, between 16 – 24 years old, who attended. The day kicked off with an exciting ground tour as the young men got to experience behind the scenes at the County Ground, which was given another dimension by both team’s kit men laying out the Swindon Town and Peterborough United kits and equipment that is used on a normal match day. The ground tour was presented with a Day in the Life of a Footballer’ concept as many of the youths dream to be a professional footballer. The Champions League style tournament followed, which saw 6 teams of 5‑a-side grace the pitches at St Joseph’s Catholic College Astro Turf. Each team chose a team name, with Barcanel (a mix of Barcelona and Arsenal) being one of the highlights. Each fixture was pure entertainment with some high scoring fixtures, great goals, super teamwork and excellent attitudes all round, as well as IMG_0034having an exciting, friendly vibe and atmosphere to them. After a highly competitive group stage where all teams played each other, the top 4 qualified for the Semi Finals. As the nerves and excitement grew Sport Central (Group Winners) beat Futsal 5’s (3rd place) 6 – 5 to secure a place in the final, whilst The Ginger Nuts (2nd Place) beat Walcot (4th Place) 2 – 0. The final was a very close knit affair, with both teams creating chances but in the last minute Sport Central grabbed a winner, winning 1 – 0. The highly anticipated Domino’s Pizza lunch came soon after the end of tournament presentation, with Swindon Town vs Peterborough following at 3pm, which proved to a thrilling end to a great day. Swindon ran out 2 – 1 winners with Nile Ranger and Yasser Kasim scoring the goals, which was a fitting tribute to the Twilight Football in itself as Yasser Kasim is the ambassador for the programme. Dave Chapple, STFiTC Twilight Development Officer, who organised and oversaw the day with his Twilight staff said: The lads IMG_0043have been brilliant today, it’s been a great day with positive behaviour and excellent attitudes. A big well done to Sport Central, who won, and all of the youths for making it an enjoyable day. All the lads are winners today. It was great to see them not only interact with each other but watch each others games, create a good atmosphere, shake hands at the end of each game and show they are positive socially too. We’ll look to run another event soon, in the hope that it’s as successful.” Thanks to Swindon Town FC, St Joseph’s Catholic College, Domino’s Pizza and the Street Games Swindon team for providing support on the day.
