Twilight In The Spotlight
News
COLLEGE ISN’T FOR EVERYONE; this includes 18 year old Aden Hearn from the Walcot area of Swindon. Unable to find paid
work either, he has just been hanging round at home getting bored and frustrated. However, there has been something keeping him going for a while now. For the last four years, Aden has been coming to the free Twilight Football sessions run by Swindon Town Football In The Community Trust which Aden has described as being “the highlight of his week.” Firstly it was just to play, but when college didn’t work out for him, Dave and Ziggy the Trust’s coaches suggested he give football coaching a try, and were there to give some key advice as well as being part of a big opportunity. (Aden questioning one of his favourite STFC players — Yaser Kasim at a Twilight Football session, see right). Twilight Football, now part of the Street Games Swindon Project, is able to offer young people a chance to gain experience and qualifications by becoming involved in the Street Games Swindon Volunteer Programme, as Aden explains: “It’s helped me a lot. We are given the chance to help with football coaching in the STFC After School Clubs and Development Centres, whilst being put on training courses with Doug Imrie and his team at Street Games. Plus if you do extra voluntary work and courses, you get to go to events they put on — I went to Wembley last Wednesday. It’s been a good motivator for me to start succeeding and try to get a job in football.” These trips Aden mentions includes a recent trip to Wembley were a group of volunteers who work on the Street Games Programme went to see England vs Denmark for free as a thank you for their hard work and dedication. Aden loved it so much he has been messaging staff ever since to ask when he can go again!
Aden’s long term aim is to get into paid coaching, whether it’s football based or sports, and Street Games Swindon and the Twilight Football team will be looking to get him on his FA Level 1 and other accredited qualifications to help him on his way. Twilight has given him a great boost and vital experience, as he says “I love playing but also helping out with Dave’s sessions and at Youth First in a coaching environment has been great and really confirmed my love in coaching. I enjoy it more now that I know about the techniques and skills.” (Aden with Doug Imrie before his skydive for charity, see left). Dave Chapple, who runs the Twilight Football Programme is really pleased with Aden’s progress, said: “It’s great to see Aden’s skills and knowledge develop, he really loves his football and its gives him a focus for his future. Both Twilight and Street Games offer young people opportunities they never thought they would get, so please continue to spread the word. Aden is a great example of how the project works and it’s emphasized when I visit a school and they ask ‘where and how Aden is’.” To gain opportunities through the Twilight Football and Street Games Swindon pathways and voluntary work, please contact Dave Chapple on 01793 421303 or e‑mail him on dave@stfc-fitc.co.uk.
