Our STFC U16 squads embarked on an unforgettable journey to Sweden for the 2026 Gothia Cup, one of the world’s largest and most prestigious youth football tournaments. Before the competition got underway, both the Red and Blue teams made the most of their preparation day, gaining valuable match fitness through a pair of friendly fixtures.

Away from the pitch, the players experienced Swedish football culture first-hand by attending an Allsvenskan match, where GAIS claimed a narrow 1 – 0 victory over Elfsborg. The evening provided the perfect opportunity for the squad to relax, strengthen team bonds and soak up the atmosphere before the tournament began.

The opening day of the group stage brought mixed fortunes for the two STFC sides. The Reds battled hard but were edged out 1 – 0 by a strong Norwegian outfit, Lisleby FK, in a closely contested encounter. Meanwhile, the Blues made an excellent start to their campaign with a convincing victory over German side JFV Union 18, setting the tone for the days ahead.

Momentum continued to build on the second day of the competition. The Reds produced one of the tournament’s most exciting matches, scoring a dramatic last-minute winner to seal a thrilling 4 – 3 victory over Swedish side BK Forward. The Blues also impressed, recording a comfortable 2 – 0 win against Sörskogens IF, with Liam Volson scoring both goals to maintain their perfect start.

The final round of group stage fixtures saw the Blues complete an outstanding record of three wins from three. A disciplined 1 – 0 victory secured top spot in their group and a place in the prestigious A‑Cup knockout stages. The Reds were narrowly beaten 2 – 1 in another fiercely competitive contest but showed plenty of determination throughout, earning a place in the B‑Cup knockout competition.

As the tournament entered the knockout stages, both teams continued to represent the club with pride. The Blues came up against a talented Swedish side in the A‑Cup and, despite a spirited display, were unable to overturn a strong start from their opponents. Their impressive group stage campaign and commitment throughout the tournament were a credit to the club.

The Reds enjoyed another memorable day, defeating Swiss opposition convincingly to progress to the Round of 16 in the B‑Cup. Their run eventually came to an end following a thrilling, hard-fought match against a District Select side, narrowly missing out on further progression after another determined performance.

Across four days of competitive football, both STFC U16 teams demonstrated outstanding commitment, resilience and quality against excellent international opposition. The Gothia Cup provided invaluable experience on and off the pitch, creating lasting memories and helping the players develop both as footballers and as teammates.

With one final day to enjoy in Sweden before beginning the journey home, everyone involved can look back with pride on an outstanding tournament and a fantastic experience representing STFC on the international stage.
