Swindon Town Community Foundation Hosted EFL Utilita Girls Cup Southern Finals for Second Year

Swindon Community Foundation hosted the EFL Utilita Girls Cup Southern Finals at Foundation Park for the second consecutive year, welcoming some of the most talented young girls’ school football teams from across the region.

Eight teams from across the south of England secured their place in the Southern Finals after progressing through two previous rounds of the girls’ competition, all competing for the opportunity to reach the grand final at Wembley Stadium.

The day produced a number of extremely competitive fixtures, with a very high standard of football on display throughout the tournament. The teams showcased impressive technical ability, teamwork and determination, highlighting the continued growth and quality of the girls’ game at school level.

Swindon Town was represented by Kingsdown Secondary School, whose girls’ team performed superbly and should be incredibly proud of their achievements. They impressed throughout the tournament, securing three victories during the Southern Finals and demonstrating great resilience and quality against strong opposition.

After an exciting day of football, the final saw AFC Wimbledon face Plymouth in a tightly contested match. The game was ultimately decided by a spectacular half-volley strike, giving AFC Wimbledon a 1 – 0 victory and securing their place in the grand final at Wembley, where they will face Tranmere Rovers.

Brad Carter, Assistant Head of Foundation at Swindon Community Foundation, praised the quality of football and the continued development of the girls’ game.

The standard of girls’ football throughout the tournament was incredibly high and it was fantastic to see so many talented young players competing. There were some brilliant goals scored across the day and the level of competition between all of the teams made for some really exciting matches.

Congratulations to AFC Wimbledon on winning the Southern Finals and we wish them the very best of luck when they head to Wembley for the Grand Final. I’d also like to say how proud we are of the girls from Kingstown Secondary School for representing Swindon so well. To reach this stage of the competition and secure three wins at the Southern Finals was a fantastic achievement and they should be very proud of what they accomplished.”

We also want to extend a huge thank you to the EFL for once again providing the opportunity to host the Southern Finals for the second year in a row, helping to showcase the continued growth and success of the girls’ game.”
