Saints Triumph Over Town
News
The Town Ladies dropped valuable points when they were beaten by two goals to one by Southampton Saints in the South West Combination. With So
uthampton Saints’ home pitch unplayable the game was played on a 3G pitch. Both sides took time to settle but the first real chance fell to Saints when Krystal White fired in free kick from 30 yards that Robyn Levett in the Town’s goal held. Mel Furrow spilt the home defence with a through ball to find Georgia Waters who forced the Saints keeper Hanna Houghton to dive low to save at the post. At the other end a Saints corner caused a scramble in the Town’s goalmouth but eventually Alice Smith cleared the ball off the goal line and to safety. Next, a neat ball from Chyna Collings found Beth Thompson whose shot was just wide of the target for Town. Play swung from end to end; Kat Littleboy headed over from a Saints corner and Georgia Walters saw her shot scrape the Saints post and out for a goal kick. Beth Thompson broke clear on the Town right but her shot was just wide of the far post. Saints were enjoying a good spell but were unable to find a way through the Town’s defence. In the dying minutes of the half a drive from Chyna Collings looked destined for the net but Hannah Houghton in the Saints goal did well to tip the ball over the bar. The Town made a better start to the second half and went ahead after 11 minutes. Georgia Walters swung a corner to the Saints far post to find Chyna Collings who nodded the ball into the net. The next corner that the Town gained was headed goalwards by Michelle Rich but Leah Shave headed to the ball onto the Saints cross bar and over. The Town had the ball in the net again when Georgia Walters hooked the ball past the advancing home keeper and in to the net but to the crowd’s surprise the goal was disallowed. The Town were pressing to build on their lead but Saints drew level in the 81st minute. Alice Smith tackled Amber Siley and as the ball spun clear to the keeper the official again amazed everyone by awarding a free kick for a back pass. From the resulting kick Lucy Harper picked out Crystal White who scored from close range. The Town threw everything forward but in the 42 minute were caught at the back when Amber Sibly slipped past a defender to score with a low drive. A miserable afternoon for the Town was completed in injury time when Ellie Maynard was dismissed for a second booking. The Town Reserve game against Frome Town in the Wiltshire County League was postponed.
